Luis Alberto Lopez Retains His IBF Featherweight Title, Beats Joet Gonzalez Via A Unanimous Decision

Luis Alberto Lopez successfully defended his IBF featherweight title against Joet Gonzalez via a unanimous decision: 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

Lopez was confident heading into the fight as he vowed to stop Gonzalez and be the first person to do so. And yet, the fight was anything but that. In the early parts of the fight, Lopez began well as he dominated with his right hand. This was followed by combinations with his hooks as Gonzalez struggled to counter.

During the fourth round, Gonzalez began to settle into the fight as he found some success. And in round six, Gonzalez landed his own right hand on several occasions. But in doing so, he did risk getting hit back with punches from the champion.

And during the second half of the fight, that is when Lopez began to pull away. He landed the more cleaner punches, and so it told in the eighth round. Gonzalez began to tire as swelling emerged on his face near the right side. Gonzalez could not figure Lopez out. The challenger failed to apply any sustained pressure as Lopez took it on the cards comfortably, despite his opponent feeling it was closer.

Reaction

“We knew that Joet Gonzalez is a very dangerous fighter. He never stops attacking. He can take any you throw at him. We knew that’s what we came to do and that he came with a lot of hunger to take the title away from me, but I also am very hungry to remain champion.

“I hurt him. I saw that I hurt him. But, as I’ve said, he’s a warrior who can take anything you throw at him, even the bucket. He is still standing, and my respects to him,” Lopez

“I thought the scores should have been a little closer,” Gonzalez said. “Overall, I am very disappointed in my performance. I felt that I could have done a lot better. By far, this is the worst performance of my title fights,” Gonzalez said. “Even though I prepared to the fullest. I am truly disappointed in my performance,” Gonzalez
