McGregor vs. Chandler Canceled For UFC 303; New Main Event Announced

After The Notorious suffered an injury, Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler has been replaced by Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka for UFC 303.

The June 29 card will now see Pereira defend his UFC Light Heavyweight Title in rematch of their UFC 295 bout, which the Brazilian won. Speculation had been running rife that McGregor vs. Chandler would not take place. Rumors first began when the first presser for June 3 was postponed.

The UFC acted at the last minute, with McGregor blaming it on ‘obstacles.’ The Irishman also posted a picture from a doctor’s office, hinting an injury. The silence from the UFC added further doubt. Ariel Helwani then admitted on more than one occasion that the UFC was putting out ‘feelers’ for a replacement. Now, the news has been confirmed.

It is a massive blow for McGregor, who has not fought since losing to Dustin Poirier in 2021 at UFC 264. It also raises doubts that he will be able to return from his leg injury. Chandler will also deal with further inactivity, given that he had chosen to wait for the McGregor fight following his UFC 281 loss to Poirier in 2022. However, there is hope the fight will take place at UFC 306 from The Las Vegas Sphere.

The news gives Pereira another chance to stake his claim as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters. He defended his belt with a first-round KO win over the former champion Jamahal Hill at UFC 300 in his last fight. That was the first defense of his title since winning the vacant belt against Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295 to become a two-weight champion. Prochazka hopes he can avenge that loss. His last bout was a second-round KO win over Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 300. The change in the UFC 303 card has gotten fans talking.
