Michael Chiesa, MMA Community Reminiscences Elias Theodorou Who Died At 34 Years Old

Former UFC fighter Elias Theodorou has died at 34 years old.

Multiple outlets reported the news early Monday morning, and MMA Fighting confirmed the death with a representative for Theodorou. TSN reported that he was battling stage 4 liver cancer.

Former UFC standout Chael Sonnen asked for a moment of silence during the Jake Paul vs Anderson Silva pre-fight press conference Monday afternoon; he noted that he was fighting through the illness privately.

Theodoru (19-3) competed in 22 MMA bouts, including an 8-3 run in the UFC.

Aside from wins over Eryk Anders, Dan Kell and Sam Alvey, he was known for being an advocate for the use of medicinal marijuana in combat sports.

In 2020, he became the first fighter to get a therapeutic use exemption for medical cannabis, granted by the British Columbia Athletic Commission.

A number of names in the MMA community paid tribute to the fighter including UFC welterweight Michael Chiesa who shared a story of when Theodorou literally gave him clothes off of his back.

UFC President Dana White also commemorated the Canadian fighter with an Instagram story of Theodorou and wrote, “RIP Elias Theodorou.”
