Munguia Eyes Jermall Charlo As Backup If Canelo Or Benavidez Fights Don’t Happen

Jaime Munguia wants Jermall Charlo next if he can’t secure a fight with Canelo Alvarez or David Benavidez.

Munguia is coming off an impressive win against John Ryder. He dropped the Brit four times before stopping him in round nine. After the fight, Munguia called out Alvarez for an all-Mexican clash. But Canelo’s recent announcement on Mexican TV confirmed he would fight an American.

Jermall Charlo and Terence Crawford were seen as the leading names. Charlo recently backtracked on his comments about fighting Canelo, as Crawford appears the favorite. But Crawford has now been ruled out, as Alvarez said he would get no credit for beating him.

Benavidez is also keen on fighting Canelo, leaving Munguia down the pecking order. That has left Munguia no choice but to consider alternatives. Now, he has earmarked Charlo for his next bout.

“I would like to face Canelo or Benavidez, but if it’s not possible, against [Jermall] Charlo, it would be a good fight, and we are here to face the best,” Munguia said

The fight is unlikely to test Munguia compared to other boxers at 168. Charlo is not a super middleweight. He has also been very inactive, only returning last year after more than two years out of the ring with mental health issues. While he did beat Jose Benavidez Jr., that is not enough to prepare him for Munguia.

The Mexican could face the other 168-pounders, including Caleb Plant, David Morrell Jr. or Christian Mbilli. Plant is the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion who has been in the ring with Canelo and Benavidez. Morrell and Mbilli are seen as the future of the 168-pound division, as both are undefeated. Those fights may come in time, as Munguia expressed his desire to fight the best.

“We will continue working and fighting. Obviously we are always trying to improve, the truth is I felt very good in the last fight, and I think we are ready for any challenge at 168 pounds,” Munguia added
