Robert Garcia: Rematch Happens if Mikey Beats Spence

Robert Garcia, the brother and trainer of Mikey Garcia — the four-division and current WBC lightweight champion — feels IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr. will struggle to stop his brother in their battle of the unbeatens title clash in March.

Robert Garcia says he sees the fighters on basically an even playing field and that Mikey Garcia won’t go down as easy as Spence would like. In fact, he sees Mikey Garcia not only going the distance with Spence, but also getting a nod from the judges.

“It is definitely a very difficult fight,” Robert Garcia said. “Spence is very strong and very quick with tremendous skills, but Mikey is also very skilled, very strong and very fast, too.”

Garcia is no stranger to bouncing around divisions with success, winning titles at 126, 130, 135 and 140, but the step up in weight and disadvantages he faces against Spence are another level. Garcia will be going up to 147, 12 pounds above the weight class he currently holds a title in. Garcia will be giving up 3.5 inches in height (5’9.5″ vs. 5’6″) and four inches in reach (72 inches vs. 68 inches) to Spence.

The last time Garcia faced a left-handed puncher, like Spence, was in January 2017, when he won his WBC Lightweight Title from Dejan Zlaticanin, finishing the boxer from Montenegro off with a third-round knockout. In Garcia’s last outing, a WBC/IBF Lightweight Title unification bout with Robert Easter Jr., who is about one-half foot taller than Garcia and had eight inches in reach against the American. Nonetheless, Garcia managed to knock Easter down in the third before cruising his way to a unanimous decision win.

But Robert Garcia knows Spence can’t be written off so easily; he even sees his brother and Spence having a rematch if Mikey is able to pull off the win.

“Only fighters who have been in the ring against Mikey can tell you how difficult Mikey is inside of the ring, and that’s one thing Errol Spence will find out,” Robert Garcia said. “I think it’s going to be a fight full of action that the fans are going to love and enjoy with Mikey winning a decision, and, of course, there will be a rematch. That is my prediction.”
