Robert Garcia Willing To Train Errol Spence Jr.

Robert Garcia is open to training Errol Spence Jr. following his departure from Derrick James

Reports indicate Spence left James following a dispute over pay. Their last fight together was a ninth-round knockout loss against Terence Crawford, who became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Spence is in line for a return, indicating his desire to face Sebastian Fundora next.

Fundora became the new WBO and WBC Junior Welterweight Champion, beating Tim Tszyu via a split decision. Crawford is the WBO mandatory at 154, but Fundora may vacate the belt to fight Spence. If that happens, Spence would need a trainer, putting Garcia in the conversation.

“If he reached out to me, I would definitely consider speaking and talking to him. I would love to because those are challenges for me, too. Look at Marcos Maidana. He had the best paydays of his life when he came to me. Sometimes fighters need something like that [to come to a Mexican boxing gym]. Maybe Spence needs something like that. He already has a great style. He was pound-for-pound, one of the best fighters in the world. It’s just little touches. Honestly, it would be a challenge for me too. I wouldn’t mind. It would be a good challenge for me. I would love to talk to him to put something together, why not?” Garcia said

Garcia may face competition from Calvin Ford, Gervonta Davis trainer. Ford was also keen on training Spence, provided he received James’ blessing. Spence and Tank Davis are also close friends, making it much easier for The Truth to transition into that gym. Since Ford has made Davis a KO artist, he may be the person to rekindle that in Spence.

“First I’d go to Derrick James, and get permission from Derrick James. That’s the first thing I’d do. If Derrick give me his blessings, 100% I’d jump in with both feet because he’s a good friend of Tank’s. You get what I’m saying?” Ford stated
