Rolly Takes Shots At Ryan Garcia & Golden Boy – ‘I Don’t Need Them’

Rolando Romero has hit out at Ryan Garcia and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions after his fight with Ryan never went ahead.

Romero and Garcia were in discussions for an April 20 fight. Ryan withdrew from talks with Devin Haney to pursue the Romero fight. But Rolly accused Garcia’s team of trying to make the Isaac Cruz fight without him knowing. Romero then signed a contract to face Cruz, leaving Garcia to sign a deal to face Haney. Looking back, Romero had no regrets about fighting on Amazon Prime Video.

“When I said I was fighting Pitbull, I got calls from everybody at Golden Boy, begging me to fight them [Ryan Garcia]. So, let’s see who needed who in reality. I don’t need them. Ryan Garcia made the most money with Al Haymon [fighting Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, the biggest name in the PBC platform]; he took a massive, massive pay cut. So, Al Haymon is where all the money is at,” Romero said

Garcia did make $30 million for the Davis fight, but it was helped by DAZN’s co-promotion since the platform also aired it. Amazon Prime Video is also coming into boxing for the first time, meaning there is still uncertainty over how it will perform. Showtime produced content for 37 years before leaving boxing last year, making it a tough act to follow. But based on how DAZN has been performing, Romero stuck by his comments.

“Why am I going to go fight on a platform [DAZN] when I can grow Amazon Prime, which is already the biggest platform in boxing history? You’re going to tell me I made the wrong decision? No, I’m over here. Al [Hamon] made me a beautiful offer. They [Ryan Garcia] can go fight on on their network [DAZN] doing 20K PPV buys. Al Haymon gave me a better deal. Al Haymon takes care of his fighters,” Romero added
