Garcia has his first fight under Derrick James at 140 following his loss to Gervonta Davis at lightweight. In the build-up, Garcia had been very vocal about feeling confident heading into the fight, given the fact that he is now fighting at a weight that suits him. Standing in his way is Duarte. The Mexican is known for being a pressure fighter who is capable of stopping his opponents with either hand. The fighter has stopped his last 11 opponents, which is why Garcia will have to be on his A-game to avoid an upset.
In addition, Garcia has had to deal with promotional issues. His problems with Golden Boy are well-documented, as he took the time to even fire verbal shots at Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins following the latter’s comments that Garcia could stop boxing if things didn’t go his way against Duarte.
Elsewhere, in chief support, Floyd Schofield takes on Ricardo Lopez in a lightweight clash. Both boxers were moved up to the co-main event after Ohara Davies‘ WBA junior welterweight interim clash with Ismael Barroso was postponed when the Brit suffered delays to his visa. With that being said, here were the key highlights from the headlining fighters.
“Bernard doesn’t decide when I stop boxing…nobody was telling him when to stop boxing. Oscar says we miss interpret what they said, it’s plain English,” Garcia
“I’m here to make an example to the 140-pound division,” Garcia
