Davis secured a unanimous decision win in 2021 against the Mexican, who proved to be a durable fighter. Despite coming out second best, Cruz’s performance in the loss was praised. He refused to slow the pace down and heard the final bell, unlike 27 of Davis’ previous opponents. However, Davis revealed afterwards he injured his hand during the fight. The win was even more impressive in keeping an aggressive fighter at bay with an injury. Cruz has since been vocal about having a rematch to settle the score. However, this has now been shut down by Davis.
“I want the American fans to know me as well as the Mexican fans, so I have to go up against the very best. First, I want that rematch with Gervonta Davis no matter what. After that, I want to face Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko,” Cruz said
“I beat your a** with one hand rock head,” Davis
Outside of Cruz, the two most prominent names in the lightweight division for Davis are Vasiliy Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson. The Ukrainian is reportedly close to agreeing a fight with George Kambosos Jr. for next year in April. Meanwhile, a fight with Stevenson appears unlikely following a below-par performance against Edwin De Los Santos. Despite getting the victory, Stevenson was booed on his way out of the ring, making him an unlikely candidate for Davis. Davis’ next opponent remains unclear.
