The Friday Five: March 16th, 2018

1. Floyd Mayweather Training With Tyron Woodley For MMA Debut:

Last week, UFC middleweight champion, Tyron Woodley told TMZ that he has offered to train Floyd Mayweather the tools to fight in the UFC.

This week, TMZ caught Mayweather leaving a Los Angeles restaurant, and claims that he has been talking with Woodley and his training will be “starting soon.”

Mayweather believes that some of his skills are already up to par, mainly his wrestling.

“I can wrestle,” Floyd says … “My wrestling game is not that bad. On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s probably a 7 and I think we could take it up to like a 9.”

2. Cyborg Gives Nunes Deadline For Superfight:

This week Amanda Nunes made it known that she’d rather defend her title than have a superfight with Cris Cyborg.

Nunes, is set to defend her UFC bantamweight title at UFC 224 on May 12th against Raquel Pennington, even with the idea of a fight with Cyborg at UFC 226 was on the table.

Cyborg, the current UFC women’s featherweight title holder, defended the crown in a first round thrashing of Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222, and in a new statement to MMA Fighting claims that she believes Nunes used her as a negotiating tactic.

In retaliation for this alleged slight, Cyborg in her statement to MMA Fighting has set an ultimatum for Nunes. Either accept a fight at UFC 226 on July 6th, or she will no longer “invest any more time” in making this fight happen.

Cyborg will be watching Nunes fight on May 12th, to see if the bantamweight champion is a “draw,” and how many pay per view buys she can bring in as the main event of the show.

In regards to the ultimatum, Cyborg is committed to fighting on the UFC 226 card, which includes a  “super fight” for the UFC heavyweight title between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, and if its not Nunes, its against “whoever is ready.”

Gennady Golovkin believed for a moment last week that his highly anticipated rematch with Canelo Alvarez would be cancelled, when Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol.

Golovkin said that it was unfortunate not only for Alvarez, but also for the sport of boxing. He also feels that Alvarez’ team needed to do more in taking precautions with the Mexican star’s food, due to the well know issues involving clenbutrerol in Mexican cows.

“If it was meat, or milk or food is another story. The commission told us that he tested positive and it’s very bad, but I think it’s not a meat problem, it’s not just his problem, it’s a problem of his whole team. If they are professionals they must understand and know what they eat, his position.. it is not a problem of the meat. He looks very bad right now, many people see him as something negative for the sport, it is a problem of his team,” Golovkin said to ESPN Deportes.

4. Irish PM Thinks McGregor Can Make It In Politics:

While some people may shudder at the prospect of the UFC star in the Irish government, the current Irish Prime Minister isn’t scared at the prospect.

PM Leo Varadkar was stopped by TMZ this week and said that Conor McGregor could very well run for political office someday. In his words:

“Ah, you never know, stranger things have happened. Just met Arnold Schwarzenegger, so… yeah, he was a muscleman actor, career in politics after, and was a good governor! So, anything’s possible.”

And with Manny Pacquiao as a current senator in the Filipino government, MMA/Pro wrestling pioneer Antonio Inoki serving a similar role in the Japanese government, as well as the United States featuring numerous ex wrestlers and celebrities such as the aforementioned Schwarzenegger, anything seems to be possible.
