Ilia Topuria Knocks Out Volkanovski To Win Featherweight Title – UFC 298 Results

Ilia Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski in round 2, claiming the UFC Featherweight title in the process in the main event of UFC 298.

The challenger came into the contest bursting with confidence, predicting a knockout all week and even changing his Instagram bio days before the contest to “UFC world champ.” Topuria made good on his promise, as he put the lights out on long-time champion Volkanovski in the second frame.

Volkanovski took the first round with his trademark aggression and elusive movement. Things took a massive turn just three minutes later. “El Matador” used combinations and forward pressure to set up the fight-ending exchange, where he caught Volkanovksi with a vicious right hand.

Topuria moved his undefeated record to 15-0, becoming the first to both beat and stop Volkanovksi at featherweight. At just 27 years old, Topuria is a star on the rise.

Robert Whittaker and Paul Costa exchanged heavy shots early and often in their middleweight bout, setting the tone for a firecracker of a co-main event. Both middleweights landed big blows in the opening round, with Costa nearly finishing the former champion with a beautiful spinning heel kick at the end of the round. “The Reaper” responded in round 2, handling Costa’s jabs well and responding with his own power punches and leg kicks, which visibly hurt his opponent. Whittaker pulled away in the third round, staying patient and landing the heavier shots en route to a unanimous decision win.

Ian Machado Garry remained undefeated, using his footwork and striking to stifle Geoff Neal. Garry turned in a disciplined performance and took a close split decision.

Merab Dvalishvili made it 10 wins in a row with a victory over former two-time champion Henry Cejuo. “The Machine” rallied after a close opening round, using his pressure and wrestling to secure a clear-cut decision win. Next up for Dvalishvili is a long-awaited shot at bantamweight gold, as he’ll face the winner of Sean O’Malley vs. Marlon Vera.

Anthony Hernandez kicked off the main card with a victory against Roman Kopylov, securing a second round submission win. Hernandez was persistent in his wrestling, eventually taking Kopylov’s back and locking up a rear naked choke.
