Although they were approved to fight each other for a chance to face WBC champion Tyson Fury, the two former titleholders looked into other options publicly.
After the failure of Fury’s planned heavyweight match with Oleksandr Usyk, so far, both Wilder and Ruiz expressed their desire to fight against them.
Wilder has expressed his wish to fight against Usyk, who is the current champion of WBA, IBF, and WBO. On the other hand, Ruiz has also shown his interest in fighting against Fury.
Usyk is bound by several mandatory requirements in his upcoming three fights. If he attempts to fight Wilder, the WBA, IBF, and WBO will take away his titles, leaving Wilder with no opportunity to challenge the Ukrainian.
As for Ruiz, he publicly declared that he was willing to step in against Fury, by even going as far as to promote the bout on social media.
But anything less than a Fury-Usyk bout will not go down well, as fans remain patient to see the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
