Ancajas To Return On September Top Rank Card
IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is set to defend his title on an upcoming Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card.
Promoter Sean Gibbons made the announcement in Malaysia, where Manny Pacquiao is set to fight Lucas Matthysse for the WBA welterweight title. Ancajas will return to the ring on September 14 and fight in the co-main event fight. The card is currently scheduled to be headlined by Jose Ramirez’s first WBC junior welterweight title defense against Antonio Orozco.
Gibbons said there are currently two possible names that could face Ancajas are Alejandro Santiago and Miguel Gonzalez, though Gibbons said it is looking like Santiago is more likely to get the world title shot.
Ancajas last fought in June, where he headlined a Top Rank Boxing card that was streamed on ESPN+, defeating fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan in the first world title fight between two boxers born from the Philippines since 1925. That card also had WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai fight on the undercard.
The card is set to take place in Fresno, California, where Ramirez was supposed to defend his title on July 7 against Danny O’Connor, but the fight had to be scrapped after O’Connor was hospitalized the day of the weigh-ins.
