Andrade Busted On Gun Charge

The current WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade was arrested on Thursday, after officers in his hometown caught him driving with an unregistered handgun.

Andrade, 30, was pulled over by Providence, Rhode Island police, and found a Glock 19 pistol inside Andrade’s bag. The middleweight titleholder explained that he carried the gun due to his fame and fear of being robbed, yet the gun was not registered.

“There’s no excuse for carrying a gun without a permit,” said Providence Police detective Maj. David Lapatin. “Whether you claim you’re transporting large amounts of money, or your life is in danger, you can make your case to get a permit [to carry a concealed weapon]. But you cannot obtain a gun and carry it in the city of Providence without one.”

Per the Providence Journal, two officers were driving on Coggeshall Street around 2:30 a.m. when they found Andrade stopped in his Mercedes, blocking traffic while talking to a friend in another Mercedes, according to police.

Andrade would be questioned by officers, who would glance continuously at his own backpack, which upon a search would contain the gun and 10 rounds of ammunition.

Andrade would be charged with one count of possession of a firearm without a license — a felony. He was arraigned Thursday in District Court and released on bail.
