Over the past few years, Demetrius Andrade has been looking to expand his resume by facing some of the best middleweights in boxing. Each time, however, he hasn’t gotten his opportunity. Speaking on Matchroom Boxing’s “The Lockdown Tapes” podcast, Andrade (29-0) spoke about the fighters he wishes to face.
Someone who was left off the WBO Middleweight Champion’s list? Gennadiy Golovkin.
“I would say GGG, but you know, GGG, he did his thing, he had his time,” Andrade stated, via Boxing Scene. “Yeah, he’s a great name. Did I fight him at his prime? No. Can I beat him at his prime? Yeah. Will the people ever see it? No. Did Canelo fight him at his prime? [No.] Is Canelo gonna fight him again, maybe for the third time?
What Andrade was referring to was the fact that Golovkin (40-1-1) and Canelo Alvarez may be on a collision course to face one another in a trilogy bout in September. However, Golovkin has expressed interest in facing Kamil Szeremeta before he goes after Canelo.
At 38, Golovkin hasn’t been as active since his two fights with Canelo. After the second fight against Canelo resulted in a loss, he beat Steve Rolls in a rebound fight in June 2019. He then survived a war against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October for the IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles. The fight with Szeremeta has been delayed a few times, most notably a result of Golovkin’s ongoing injuries. Even though he holds middleweight gold, Andrade’s desire to face Golovkin has since dwindled.
“But it’s just like, you know, I’m just saying GGG did his thing. He showed and gave boxing all he has,” Andrade went on to say. “And is that something I’m looking forward to doing? I was at one point. But now it’s not really worth excitement if it was maybe like a year or two earlier.”
Andrade 32, won the WBO Middleweight Title in 2018 against Walter Kautondokwa. He has since retained the title against mandatory challengers in Artur Akavov, Maciej Sulęcki, Luke Keeler. During the podcast, the names of the fighters he is still interested in include Canelo Alvarez, Billy Joe Saunders, and Jermall Charlo.
Is Andrade right about Golovkin?
