Andrade Set For Title Defense vs. Akavov

Despite his recent arrest for an unlicensed handgun, Demetrius Andrade is moving on and looking at a Jan. 18 bout with Artur Akavov, which would mark his first defense of the WBO Middleweight Championship.

Andrade won the then-vacant title back on Oct. 20, sweeping the judges’ scorecards against Walter Kautondokwa. Andrade was originally booked to face then-champion Billy Joe Saunders, but a failed drug test caused Saunders to forfeit the WBO title, which he would’ve likely been stripped of regardless.

Akavov, who is ranked No. 8 by the WBO, has won all three of his bouts since a failed title bid against Saunders back in December 2016.

The fight will take place at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Former three-division world champion Jorge Linares and former WBO junior lightweight champion Chris Algieri will also compete on the card, both looking for a shot at WBO super lightweight champion Maurice Hooker.
