Andrade Traveling For Fight, OK With Potential Cancelation

Just recently, Jessica Andrade touched down into the United States following a flight from Brazil. Her destination was Las Vegas, as per the request of the UFC. The goal was simple: to make sure she was available for UFC 249.

Andrade (20-7) has been training primarily in her garage as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike other countries, Brazil is allowing people to travel out of the country. The only limitation it has made is not allowing non-residents to come in. Following the announcement that Khabib Nurmagomedov would not be able to leave Russia due to restrictions, thus cancelling the bout between the Lightweight Champion and Tony Ferguson, the UFC did not want to take any chances.

The former UFC Strawweight Champion was set to co-main event UFC 249 against Rose Namajunas. It is a rematch of their bout at UFC 237 back in May where Andrade slammed “Thug Rose” on her head, beating her to become champion. That was in Brazil. While the UFC does not have a location set for UFC 249, Andrade is ready for whatever is planned.

In early March, Andrade told MMA Fighting the following:

“If the fight is in Brooklyn, Las Vegas or any other place that is safe, I’ll fight,” said Andrade. “I’ve fought in some many different places in the world, even China, so location doesn’t affect much. It’s about taking care of yourself and staying safe. I’m training hard and focused. I’m sure everything will be alright with time, the number of cases will go down, this virus will go away, and then we’ll find out where we’re fighting. God willing, this fight will happen somewhere.”

A lot has changed over the past few weeks. A number of events have been postponed due to the virus, which has continued to spread all over the world. The UFC had to cancel three major events, with future cards in limbo. With Khabib out, the UFC is looking to potentially add more fights and a new main event. With the Nevada and New York Athletic Commission barring events, as well as limitations all over, it is unknown where UFC 249 will take place.

While Andrade does not care where the location is, she is keeping an eye on the current situation. A number of fighters have been requesting to fight for financial reasons. Andrade is ready to stop everything for the sake of safety, for herself and those that she loves.

“We are worried because we have families, elders at home, father and mother who live away from us, so our biggest concern is about the human being,” Andrade went on to say. “Financially speaking, I’m fine. Even if the fight doesn’t happen I can get along just fine until my next fight. We’re praying that everyone stays safe and this virus goes away. That’s what really affects us. You see people dying in Italy, and their families can’t even see them, you don’t know where to bury them.”

FIGHT SPORTS will be providing updates on all things UFC 249 as information comes in.
