Ward retired from the sport in 2017 after knocking out Sergey Kovalev, giving him two consecutive wins over the Russian. The American retired undefeated with a record of 32-0. Ward was inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2021 to put him down as one of the best of all time. Ward won titles at super middleweight and light heavyweight. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner in 2004.
Alvarez, who is the current undisputed super middleweight champion, dominates the division Ward once ruled. Like Ward, the Mexican also moved up to light heavyweight to knock out Kovalev. Although a fight has been entertained since Ward’s retirement, the former world champion questioned whether Canelo would have fought him if he were competing.
“Nah, I don’t think he would have fought me. My name was never mentioned with Canelo Alvarez until he fought a common opponent, and he fought Sergey Kovalev. Kovalev, I don’t want to say he was shot, but he was on his way out the door. He wasn’t the ‘Krusher’ at that point in time.
“That’s a strategic move, and that’s what Canelo does. I don’t believe that if I was still active at that time he fought Kovalev he would have fought me because my name was never mentioned in the same breath as Canelo Alvarez. If I was active, I think it would have remained that way,” Ward said
The same accusations have been made against Canelo for not facing David Benavidez. The Mexican Monster is the current WBC interim champion, a position he has held for around two years. His last fight was a stoppage-win over Demetrius Andrade. In the aftermath, a Canelo fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend or Mexican Independence Day had been suggested. But Canelo continues to remain coy over the fight by stating he is in a position to call the shots.
“If I beat Benavidez, they’re gonna say, ‘Oh, why don’t you face this other guy?’ Look at my history, I’ve done everything in boxing. I’ve done it all … In this moment I’m the king and I can do whatever I want … I’m always here to make the best fights,” Canelo stated
Why would he.
Ward is naturally 2 weights heavier.
Canelo, for his height and natural weight, has achieved far more than Ward did
