Andre Ward Is ‘Cautiously Optimistic’ That Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. Will Happen

Andre Ward believes there is a chance that fight fans will see Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr.

The general consensus is that the fight to make at welterweight is Crawford vs. Spence. Both men are undefeated world champions. Crawford is the WBO titleholder, while Spence holds the WBC and IBF gold. Some consider Crawford to be the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world but Spence feels he should be ranked higher.

During an ESPN roundtable, Ward said that he thinks Crawford vs. Spence will take place but he wouldn’t bet the house on it (h/t BoxingScene.com).

“I am cautiously optimistic that we’re gonna see this fight in late 2021.”

Ward went on to chime in on Spence and PBC wanting a higher purse split if the fight were to take place.

“Terence Crawford. Errol Spence. I know both guys personally, I’m not taking a side but I will say this. I get what Errol Spence and (PBC)… I get it. I get the play. A lot of people at this point get the point. You have the ace card. You have the majority of welterweights on your side. Well-played, you won the battle. But the war has yet to be fought and has yet to be won. The question is not, do these guys have to fight one another? It’s, do you want to fight one another? It’s where these guys are at right now.”

Crawford and Spence both had successful title defenses in 2020. “Bud” defeated Kell Brook via fourth-round TKO to retain the WBO gold. Spence turned in a one-sided showing against Danny Garcia, earning a unanimous decision win to maintain his hold on the WBC and IBF gold.
