When Andy Ruiz Jr steps on the scales this weekend, he already knows about how much he’ll weigh.
Ruiz is aiming to weigh between 260 to 265 pounds for his fight against Luis Ortiz on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
“Nothing crazy,” Ruiz told media.
“I’m not here to lose so much weight. I’m trying to be fit and gain a little bit of muscle and not be too skinny. It’s not a body contest. The main thing is to stay focused, stay prepared, and stay ready.”
Weight has always been a question for Ruiz. In 2009, when he went pro, he weighed 297 ½ pounds. The lowest he weighed for a fight was 246.
Then, when he pulled off an upset win against then unified champion Anthony Joshua in June 2019, he was 268 pounds. In their rematch later that year, when he was 283 ½ pounds, he lost the belts.
But since that defeat, he has overcome Chris Arreola.
“I’m trying to do better than in my last fight [against Chris Areola in May 2021],” said Ruiz.
“I wasn’t really impressed by my performance. I need to work on more technique and boxing. I focused more on losing weight, and I think that affected me in the gym. I just have to do better.”
