Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Tyrone Spong Added to upcoming Triller card on July 16 in Mexico
From outbidding the likes of DAZN and Top Rank Boxing to earning the rights for premiering Mike Tyson’s return against Roy Jones Jr. to announcing its own league – Triller Fight Club – the streaming platform keeps getting better with the time.
Ever since the introduction of Triller in combat sports, the social media company has gained immense popularity among the diehard fighting fans and it seems they are taking it one step further with their new announcement.
Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. will take on Tyrone Spong as part of an upcoming Triller Fight Club card scheduled on July 16 in Mexico City, Mexico. The card will premiere from the historic Plaza de Toros in Mexico City.
Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) hasn’t fought for over a year. His last appearance came against Chris Arreola in early 2021 when the Mexican-based fighter made easy work of his opponent and won the fight by majority decision.
Ruiz became an overnight sensation when he knocked out Anthony Joshua to claim titles in the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO at the close of 2019. In unprecedented sequelae of events, his life took a dramatic turn and the Mexican became a common household name among the boxing fraternity.
But he couldn’t hold the titles for very long as Joshua made a strong comeback and handed the first-ever defeat to the ‘Destroyer’ to regain the titles just six months later. Ruiz will be hoping to get back in the mix of the title contenders with a win over Tyron Spong later this year.
As far as Spong (14-0, 13 KOs) is concerned, this will be the biggest fight of his boxing career as he amazes a perfect record of 14 wins and no losses between 2015 and 2019.
Earlier this year, the former kickboxing legend was in action against Sergei Kharitonov in an MMA bout under the banner of Eagle FC, the promotion’s first event in the United States. Though Spong lost the fight, the 36-year-old claimed that he still has a lot to offer to the fighting and he will soon be competing again with the best in combat sports.
Now Spong has the opportunity to make a huge impact and rejuvenate himself by securing a victory against the former champ this July in Mexico.
