Entering this fight, Peter Quilliin appeared to be near a super middleweight title shot, but that appears to be out the window now thanks to a split-decision upset loss at the hands of Alfredo Angulo.
The bout headlined a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, California.
Quillin was originally scheduled to battle Caleb Truax in an IBF super middleweight title eliminator last month, but the bout fell through due to injury, and this bout with Angulo was soon booked.
Angulo got off to a quiet start as Quillin used his speed to his advantage. Angulo started to pick up the pace over the next couple of rounds, trying to match Quillin’s production.
The turning point of the fight came in the fourth, when Angulo connected with a big right hook in the final minute that stunned Quillin. Angulo pressured the former middleweight champion, trying to finish him off.

From there, the bout turned into a firefight. Angulo worked over Quillin in the fifth, but Quillin battled back in the sixth until he was rocked by another hook. This became a theme for most of the remainder of the bout, with Quillin working well at the start, only to get rocked by Angulo.

After another dominating round from Angulo in the ninth, both fired heavy leather until the final bell in the 10th and final round.
While one judge awarded the contest to Quillin 96-94, the other two gave the fight to Angulo with scores of 96-94 and 97-93.
