Are We Close To Seeing A Fight Between Mikey Garcia And Manny Pacquiao?
As boxing continues to slowly come back, Mikey Garcia continues his quest to go after big fights. Looking to be one of the best boxers in the world, Garcia believes he is ready to face Manny Pacquiao. All that he needs to do is wait for Team Pacquiao to respond.
Speaking with Fight Hype, Garcia (40-1) discussed the opportunity he has been craving for. He recently mentioned that there were talks for a fight with him and Pacquiao (62-7-2) during the time of his bout with Jessie Vargas this past February. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, talks stopped. Garcia believes that a fight can still happen, just not right away.
“It’s been a year since he last fought so who knows if he still wants to fight me next, or maybe he wants to fight somebody else,” Garcia stated, via Bad Left Hook. “I haven’t spoken to the team in a long time, so I have no clue. I would love to get a fight with Manny…I think that would be a terrific fight, styles make fights and I think that would be great, not only for me but I think the fans would really enjoy it.
“I hope we can clear this whole thing soon, for everybody to get healthy and not be afraid of the virus. Hopefully, they develop some kind of vaccine or something that can really control this and help.”
Garcia has competed in featherweight and lightweight. A former WBO Featherweight Champion, Garcia decided to test his luck in a third division. Making his welterweight debut in March 2019, Garcia lost a one-sided affair against Errol Spence Jr for the IBF Welterweight Title. Looking to prove he still belonged in the division, Garcia came back and beat Vargas via unanimous decision.
Pacquiao is on a three-fight win streak and is 5-1 in his last six. A former WBO Welterweight Champion, Pacquiao won the WBA (Regular) Welterweight Title from Lucas Matthysse in 2018. His last bout was a split decision win over Keith Thurman in July 2019 for the WBA (Super) Welterweight Title.
As far as how he would do against the legendary fighter, Garcia is pretty confident in his ability.
“I feel that I would be able to box and counterpunch, use my skills that way to try to make the fight in my favor,” Garcia ended up saying. “If I stayed in the pocket and trading punches, I think that would be a mistake. I got to be able to move, I got to be able to dodge punches, I got to be able to counter, I got to punch in combination to those counters, similar to the way Juan Manuel Marquez fought.
“If I stayed and tried to trade punches with him, I think he would overwhelm me with punches because he punches in five-six-seven punch combinations and moves around different angles. So I’m not going to do that. I think I would box, try to box effectively on the outside, and then counterpunch in combination. I think that’s the key to a fight with Manny.”
As of now, both fighters have no assigned matchups for the next few months. Terence Crawford has been the closest to a potential bout with Pacquiao.
