Heading into 2020, there were several fight opportunities for Katie Taylor. Fans almost got one that was considered a superfight. With that one appearing to die down, it looks like a rematch from last year is in Taylor’s future.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn discussed the idea of Taylor (15-0) defending her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring Lightweight Titles against Delfine Persoon. This comes after talks with Amanda Serrano have turned hostile. The fight, if official, could be put as the co-headliner under the interim WBC Heavyweight Title fight between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin. That would take place during the finale of “Matchroom Fight Camp” on April 22.
“We are working hard on the Taylor versus Persoon rematch for August 22,” Hearn stated. “Katie wants the biggest fights out there and when Serrano pulled out, Katie immediately asked about the Persoon rematch.”
Taylor was supposed to fight seven-division champion Amanda Serrano on May 2 before the coronavirus pandemic postponed the bout. During the wait as a result of boxing shutting down like most sports, Serrano was rumored to appear on an obstacle course-like reality show called “Exatlon”, on Telemundo. Hearn threatened legal action if Serrano were to go through with the show, and things escalated on social media when contracts were brought up.
Serrano (38-1-1) and Lou DiBella stated that the fight contract was only signed for a specific date. The price of the purses were also involved, and DiBella pointed out that it was a personal services contract and that they didn’t know the initial fight was off until it was on social media. Once called the Super Bowl of women’s boxing, a Serrano-Taylor fight appears to be off. Hearn did mention Persoon’s name before, and recently posted a clip celebrating that fight from last year inside Madison Square Garden.
“Taylor v Persoon June 1 @TheGarden– one of the best fights I’ve seen live. RT for the rematch”
— Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) July 7, 2020
The battle the two went through last year mesmerized the MSG crowd. Taylor and Persoon went back and forth, giving it their all. In the end, Taylor would get the majority decision win in a decision some are calling controversial. She ended up winning the WBC Lightweight Title as a result.
“The first fight was one of the best I’ve ever seen live and as a fan I would love to see it again,” Hearn went on to say. “Whyte versus Povetkin and Taylor versus Persoon 2 is an epic double-header – let’s see if we can get it done.”
Taylor has since beaten Christina Linardatou for the WBO Junior-Welterweight Title. Persoon (44-2) had her 34-fight win streak snapped as a result of the loss. She rebounded in November, beating Helen Joseph via unanimous decision for the interim WBA Super-Featherweight Championship.
