Artur Beterbiev Floors Joe Smith Jr Three Times To Unify Light Heavyweight Titles
It was quick.
IBF and WBC titleholder Artur Beterbiev captured his third light heavyweight title after scoring a second-round TKO over former WBO champion Joe Smith Jr Saturday in the main event at the Hulu Theater.
“I want to be [a] good boxer one day maybe, that’s why today was a little bit better than the past, I hope,” Beterbiev said.
“Joe’s a little bit open and more easy for me to get him. Two fighters both have good punch and both tried to get [there] first. This time I’m lucky; I get there first.”
Beterbiev got into his rhythm much earlier than Smith.
But Smith didn’t lack much behind as he tried to pin Beterbiev to the corner. Beterbiev would land a counter punch, but Smith would continue to move forward.
In the second round, Beterbiev just became too much.
The two light heavyweights were slugging each other, but the Russian boxer dropped Smith, of Long Island, with a left hook, and then a flurry of punches.
Smith tried to regain his senses, but Beterbiev landed one left uppercut and a right uppercut, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Beterbiev is the only champion with a 100% knockout rate. He could be en route to face WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol soon for the undisputed status.
