Artur Beterbiev Vs. Joe Smith Pushed To June Due To Ramadan
All eyes are on the forthcoming three-belt light heavyweight unification fight between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr.
The top official Bob Arum has confirmed that the showdown is planned to be held in late June.
“That will take place in June primarily because of Ramadan. Beterbiev is very, very religious. He can’t fight during Ramadan [from April 2 to May 2]. After it’s over, he has to start training, so that would be the beginning of May,” Arum told IFL.
Arum co-promotes both Beterbiev and Smith. The two stars are quite high in morale as both of them were successful in their recent fights. Both boxers also knocked out their opponents in the ninth round of their respective fight.
IBF champion Beterbiev and WBO titlist Smith have also shown keen interest to fight each other.
After Smith grabbed a win in his last fight, his co-promoter Joe DeGuardia had warned that the team won’t wait for long for the Beterbiev fight.
“Look, I mean, obviously it’s a fight we want. It’s a fight we’ve wanted for, you know, now what, three years? We’ve been trying to make that fight,” DeGuardia said.
“We tried to make that fight before the [Dmitry] Bivol fight [in March 2019] and, you know, Beterbiev didn’t wanna take it after they told us he was gonna fight”.
On the flip side, Beterbiev’s trainer Marc Ramsay had a more diplomatic answer to the matchup when he last spoke to media last month.
“We recently had some discussions on this subject of fighting Smith and if the terms of the offer are acceptable, our answer will be affirmative,” Ramsay said.
