Arum Not Worried About Lomachenko-Campbell Judges
When it comes to boxing, anything can happen. That is especially true when the fight goes to the judges scorecards. Far too often a judges card does not reflect what type of fight took place. There are times when big fights are affected as a result.
Top Rank is hoping nothing goes wrong with one of the top fights of the year in Vasyl Lomachenko v. Luke Campbell. The former will be defending his WBA (Super), WBO, and The Ring Lightweight Titles, while also looking to grab the WBC Lightweight Title. The fight will be held inside the O2 Arena in London, Campbell’s domain.
Any sign of hometown favoritism can be washed away thanks to the judges present. Judges from Monte Carlo (Jean Robert Laine), Omar Mintun (Mexico) and Canada (Benoit Roussel) will be ringside to determine a winner if it goes the distance.
Top Rank founder Bob Arum is not concerned about the judges, regardless of where they are from. A veteran of the game, he told Boxing Scene the fight itself will end the right way.
“I’m not concerned about the judging at all because there are no English judges, no Ukrainian judges and no American judges,” Arum stated. “The judges are neutral. [Top Rank’s] Carl [Moretti] worked with the other side [Eddie Hearn, Campbell’s promoter] in approving the judges, and he’s confident that it’ll be a fair decision.”
The ESPN+produced fight will be between a young fighter who has ten wins via knockout (Lomachenko) v. a veteran in Campbell who has 16. Size wise, Campbell has the advantage, but looks can be deceiving. Arum sees it as just another fight for Lomachenko, one where he can walk away the winner.
“Luke Campbell is a very good fighter,” Arum continued. “Technically, he’s very, very good. He’s bigger than Loma, like all lightweights are, pretty much. But Loma is Loma. I’m confident because Loma is a fighter that, technically, is a very tough guy for any fighter to face and solve. It’s a good fight. I don’t think Loma will be affected by the crowd. He’s a real professional. I think it’s gonna be an entertaining fight. I believe Loma wins the fight and makes another great performance.”
