As an amateur, Andy Ruiz Jr. won two Mexican National Junior Olympics gold medals and represented Mexico at the 2008 Beijing Olympic qualification tournaments, while obtaining an amateur record of 104-8.
Trained by Freddie Roach, Ruiz made his professional debut on March 28, 2009. On Nov. 23, 2013, Ruiz won the then-vacant NABF Heavyweight Championship with a TKO win over Tor Hamer. He challenged Joseph Parker for the WBO Heavyweight Championship on Dec. 10, 2016, but lost the bout via majority decision.
