Barboza was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1986, and began training in Muay Thai at around the age of eight years old.He enjoyed the sport greatly, finishing his professional Muay Thai record is 25-3 with 22 victories by knockout and 17 first round finishes.

In 2009, Barboza relocated to the USA, initially living in Florida, which is where he began his MMA career. After a few wins by finish, he moved to New Jersey and under the tutelage of Ricardo Almeida, began to rack up enough wins to attract attention from the UFC.

Barboza made his UFC debut in 2011 at UFC 123, a TKO win over Mike Lullo courtesy of a series of punishing leg kicks. He followed that a few events later with a dramatic wheel kick knockout over Terry Etim at UFC 142 in his home country of Brazil.

Since his tenure in the promotion began, Barboza has defeated Danny Castillo, Evan Dunham, Rafaello Oliveira, Ross Pearson, and Anthony Pettis.
