Fabricio Werdum was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil on July 30th, 1977. Werdum holds black belts in Judo and Muay Thai as well as a 2nd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He competes in the heavyweight division and made his pro debut in 2002. After fighting for the promotion Pride, Werdum had his first stint with the UFC from 2007 to 2008 going 2-2. Werdum then joined Strikeforce where he broke Fedor Emelianenko’s 28 fight winning streak, and then re-joined the UFC when they bought out Strikeforce.
After going 4-0 in his return to the Octagon, Werdum received the first title shot of his career when he fought Mark Hunt for the interim UFC heavyweight title while then champion Cain Velasquez was unable to defend his title due to injury. Werdum knocked Hunt out in the 2nd round and at UFC 188 Werdum got the chance to face Velasquez for the title and scored a 3rd round submission victory to become the UFC heavyweight champion.
