Bio
Leo Santa Cruz was born in Huetamo, Michoacan, Mexico on August 10th, in 1988. Cruz accumulated nearly 150 wins as an amateur and won gold medals at the 2004 & 2005 International Junior Olympic Tournament, and the 2005 Pan American Cadet championships. In 2006 he won a silver medal at the U.S. National Championships and turned pro later that year.
In 2012 Cruz was 19-0-1 when he took on Vusi Maligna for the vacant IBF bantamweight world title. Cruz won the bout via unanimous decision and made 3 successful title defenses before moving up to super bantamweight in 2013 and winning the WBC super bantamweight world title. After 4 successful title defenses of the WBC title Cruz moved up again and in 2015 he won his 3rd world title in 3 different weight classes by defeating Abner Mares via majority decision to become the WBA featherweight world title.
