Born in Colorado, Raquel Pennington grew up playing sports with the hopes of becoming a pro boxer. She did not compete athletically in college, however, due to a broken back. Pennington began training martial arts at the age of 19, but her parents originally refused to let her compete. After a 7-1 amateur record, with five of her wins coming by submission, Pennington turned professional in March 2012, defeating Kim Couture (ex-wife of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture) in her debut.
Starting her pro career with a 3-3 record, including two losses in Invicta FC, Pennington took part in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate, making it to the semi-finals of the competition. She won her official UFC debut at the show’s finale event, defeating Roxanne Modafferi.
Pennington holds key victories over Jessica Andrade, Bethe Correia, and Miesha Tate.
