Roman “Rocky” Martinez was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico on January 31st in 1983. Martinez made his professional boxing debut at the age of 17 and won via 4th round TKO. He won a few regional titles as a super featherweight and with his record standing at 20-0-1 Martinez travelled to England for his first world title fight. Martinez defeated Nicky Cook via 4th round TKO to win the WBO super featherweight world title and become a world champion for the first time. Martinez defended the belt twice before losing it via unanimous decision to Ricky Burns in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 2012 Martinez recaptured the WBO super featherweight world title with a split decision victory and defended it twice, both times winning by split decision. Martinez lost the belt to Mikey Garcia when Garcia knocked him out in the 8th round, the first time Martinez was stopped in his career. Martinez scored the hat trick in April of 2015 when he recaptured the title a second time to become a 3-time world champion after defeating Orlando Salido via unanimous decision and made a successful title defense later that year, winning yet again by split decision.
