Augusto Mendes Granted UFC Release To Fight In ACB
Augusto Mendes’ time in the UFC is over, but he’s already signed a deal to fight for another MMA promotion.
Absolute Championship Berkut announced on social media that Mendes has agreed to a deal after being granted his UFC release.
Mendes reportedly had one fight left in his UFC deal, but it would take a while before getting that fight since Mendes tested positive for banned substances in an out-of-competition USADA test. Mendes was scheduled to fight Merab Dvalishvili at UFC Fight Night 128 in April when news of his positive test came out. The former UFC fighter planned to appeal the suspension handed to him.
Sporting a 6-2 overall MMA record, Mendes lost two of his three UFC fights, including to Cody Garbrandt in Mendes’ UFC debut, but has a “Fight of the Night” bonus for his 2017 win over Frankie Saenz at UFC Fight Night 103. The 35-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist won his first five fights in MMA before signing with the UFC in 2016..
This wouldn’t be the first time Mendes has fought for ACB, albeit not as an MMA fighter. Mendes fought on ACB’s grappling promotion, winning a jiu-jitsu tournament in 2017 when he defeated three opponents on the same night. Mendes is expected to fight in ACB in mixed martial arts.
