Australian Boxing Icon Tony Mundine Passes Away At 75
Australian boxing icon, Tony Mundine (80-15-1, 64 KOs), has passed away at the age of 75 from a heart attack.
A 96-fight veteran across a 16-year career, Mundine collected Commonwealth titles at middleweight and light heavyweight, challenged for the WBA world middleweight championship against Carlos Monzon in 1974, and beat notable opposition in Denny Moyer and Emile Griffith.
Mundine, who was the first Australian to fight in four weight divisions, came from a boxing family and was the father of former world champion boxer Anthony Mundine (48-11, 28 KOs), who last fought in 2021, and the grandfather of Rahim Mundine (3-0, 1 KO). “I don’t know what to say,” his son, Anthony, said. “I’m broken.”
“Thanks for doing all you did for me and supporting me in every moment, showing love and strength. Going to miss you … There’s only one Tony Mundine.”
The former three-division boxing champion, Jeff Fenech, also spoke on Mundine’s death.
“We didn’t just lose a great fighter,” he said. “We lost one of our great humans.”
Mundine debuted in 1969 and retired from boxing after the 96th fight of his career in 1984.
