Avni Yildirim Wants WBC Title Fight With Or Without Canelo Alvarez

Avni Yildirim has a title fight in his sights whether or not he shares the ring with Canelo Alvarez.

The WBC approved a vacant super-middleweight title fight between Yildirim and Canelo. A purse bid for the fight has been pushed back numerous times. Recent reports suggest that Canelo is more interested in fighting IBF Super-Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant.

Yildirim recently said that whether or not he goes one-on-one with Canelo, he wants to get that WBC Title shot (via Sky Sports).

“I am the WBC mandatory contender [to the vacant super-middleweight title], I earned that right from the fight with Anthony Dirrell in which I was so close to conquering my dream.

“The WBC ordered me to fight Canelo and I have been ready. But if he goes on a different direction that is his decision. I don’t care about anything, don’t care about money, I only care to fight for the WBC green belt and become the first-ever world champion from Turkey.”

Yildirim hasn’t competed since February 23, 2019. He dropped a split technical draw to Anthony Dirrell. The bout was contested for the vacant WBC Super-Middleweight Championship. It was just Yildirim’s second defeat as a professional. The other loss was at the hands of Chris Eubank Jr.

Canelo is coming off a split from DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions. The boxing megastar was involved in a legal battle with the sports streaming service and Golden Boy. Canelo was seeking $280 million in damages and the ability to break free from his contracts. Canelo ended up getting his wish for free agency.
