Barrios Vs. Ennis After Crawford Vacates WBC Welterweight Title

Terence Crawford will allegedly vacate his WBC welterweight belt and move up to 154 pounds.

Crawford is no longer the undisputed champion at welterweight after the IBF stripped him for failing to defend against Jaron Ennis. Boots became the new champion, but Crawford was contractually bound to face Spence due to the rematch. The rematch will likely occur at junior middleweight after Bud stopped Spence in the 147 clash. The win made him the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era and undisputed in a second weight class.

A move up to 154 plays into Crawford’s desire to become undisputed in a third weight class. That will see the current WBC interim champion, Mario Barrios, become the full champion. He beat Yordenis Ugas to claim the interim belt. If he is elevated, a unification with Ennis could play out. That is what Bozy Ennis was hoping for.

“That’s going to happen. I’m sure about that. That fight does make sense. We can put those titles up. We can do that. He’s [Barrios] next in line, then we’re going to take it. I didn’t know it was going to happen like that. The truth. All the ones in the top five. All the ones that have a title because they’re going to be splitting the titles up. So whoever gets the titles, that’s who we’re going after, and once we do that, we’re going to move on,” Bozy Ennis said

Barrios’ only defeats were against Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman. Since those losses, Barrios has secured wins against Jovanie Santiago and Ugas. He is also a potential opponent for Devin Haney if ‘The Dream’ decides to move up to 147 and attempts to become a world champion in his first fight at a new weight class, just as he did against Regis Prograis. Either way, Bozy Ennis was impressed with Barrios’ skills.

“The truth. I thought Ugas was going to take it, but I don’t know what kind of effect he had when he fought Spence [in 2022] because he was beat up kind of bad. And [Barrios] didn’t make it no better because he did the same thing to him. So, I think that’s a problem for that size of his face. Mario looked good. He boxed and moved. He didn’t stay there. He didn’t bang with him, only when he had him where he was supposed to have him at. I mean, once he started blinding him with his eyes, swelling them. Then he started digging down. He looked good,” Bozy Ennis
