Bellator 192: Sonnen Advances, MacDonald Wins Title
Chael Sonnen became the first man to advance to the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals with a win over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in the main event of Bellator 192, which took place at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
The first round of this bout saw Jackson keeping his chin down and guard up, working the jab. After some feeling out, the two clinch up, and eventually, Jackson is able to slam Sonnen hard onto his head before taunting “The American Gangster” to get back up. Sonnen scored a takedown with less than a minute to go and ended the round in top position.
This became somewhat of a theme for the next two rounds, as Jackson looked not like his old self. Sonnen spent most of the latter ten minutes with Jackson’s back to the cage or against the canvas and him on top. As a result of his grappling and ground success, Sonnen swept the scorecards 29-28 to move on to the next round of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix.
In the co-main event, Rory MacDonald became the new Bellator welterweight champion, defeating Douglas Lima via unanimous decision. After a brief battle in the clinch, MacDonald and Lima spent quite a portion of the first round on the ground. Lima closed guard, but that allowed MacDonald to do more offensive work. In the second, MacDonald caught a leg kick, but ate a bunch of strikes to the face. After some clinch work around the cage, the two trade control until MacDonald gets another takedown.
A lot of more grappling work came throughout round three, with MacDonald landing yet another takedown, though Lima got top game for nearly a minute after kicking out one of the challenger’s legs. Lima stuffed an early takedown attempt in the fourth, and while MacDonald landed yet another takedown later in the round, it was Lima who showed more offensive grappling skill in the round. The final round saw MacDonald land one more takedown and keep control.
The judges scored the bout 48-47, 49-45, 49-46, all in MacDonald’s favor.
