Pitbull Retains Featherweight Title At Bellator 203

It’s a rematch years in the making that ended in the same result: Patricio “Pitbull” Freire retaining his Bellator Featherweight title against Daniel Weichel.

Instead of a knockout victory like in their 2015 bout, Freire and Weichel go the distance as Freire defeated Weichel by split decision to retain his title for the first time in his current reign.

The fight started off slow as both men measured each other in round one and provided close to zero offense. Action picked up in round two as Freire landed numerous strikes to Weichel as the challenger tried to stop Freire’s offensive momentum throughout the fight by attacking from the ground.

Weichel had numerous chances to finish Freire with a submission, but Freire was able to defend well against Weichel. Freire got his best offense at the end of the fourth round where he managed to land significant strikes to Weichel, causing him to bleed from his nose. Although not a slugfest, the rematch was full of tactical fighting and Freire was the one who came out on top as the Bellator featherweight champion once more.

The championship fight was the only fight at Bellator 203 to even go past the first round as all four televised bouts end in a knockout or stoppage in the opening five minutes. The main event caps off Bellator’s two-day trip to Rome, Italy, which saw Bellator also hold Bellator 202 on July 13.
