Bellator’s Budd Calls Out Gabi Garcia

Bellator women’s featherweight champion Julia Budd appears to be interested in facing nine-time jiu-jitsu world champion and current RIZIN fighter Gabi Garcia.

A fan tweeted at bud stating he would love to see the two women compete for the inaugural RIZIN women’s openweight title. Budd quote tweeted the message and showed no hesitation, embracing the idea of facing Garcia.

Budd has competed at the 145-pound weight class her entire MMA career, while Garcia competes at heavyweight and has weighed up to 237 pounds.

Bellator and RIZIN have had a working relationship. Most recently, Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell traveled to Japan to faceĀ Kyoji Horiguchi in RIZIN’s inaugural bantamweight title fight at RIZIN 14 back on New Year’s Eve. Horiguchi won the title with a third-round submission.

Bellator light heavyweight Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has also competed in the Japanese MMA promotion and spiritual successor to PRIDE and DREAM. Lawal won the 2015 RIZIN Heavyweight Grand Prix, last defeatingĀ Jiri Prochazka in the finals, and competed in the 2016 Openweight Grand Prix. He will compete in RIZIN once again at their next event, RIZIN 15, in April, where he will have a rematch with Prochazka with the inaugural RIZIN light heavyweight title on the line.

Budd is referred to as one of the best women’s 145-pound fighters to never step foot in the UFC, spending her entire MMA career in Strikeforce, Invicta and Bellator. Budd is currently on a 10-fight win streak, defeatingĀ Marloes Coenen to become Bellator’s inaugural women’s featherweight champion in March 2017 at Bellator 174. After a controversial title defense againstĀ Arlene Blencowe that December at Bellator 189, Budd made a statement with a third-round TKO of Talita Nogueira last July at Bellator 202.

Budd also holds a victory over former UFC women’s featherweight champion Germaine de Randamie. Budd’s only two losses as a pro came in Strikeforce to current UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes, and to inaugural UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Since her MMA debut in December 2015, all but one of Garcia’s MMA bouts have been in RIZIN. Garcia is currently 6-0 with 1 No Contest, with four wins coming by submission and the other two by KO/TKO.Ā  She recently defeatedĀ Barbara Nepomuceno at RIZIN 14.
