Beltran Misses Weight, Can’t Win WBO Title

Ray Beltran lost his chance to become a lightweight world champion on the scale this week, coming in 1.5 pounds over the 135 pound limit.

Beltran is set to fight WBO lightweight champion Richard Commey on Friday night for a card airing on ESPN, but now if Beltran wins he will not walk out as a world champion, refusing to take the two hours allowed by the California State Athletic Commission to lose the final 1.5 pounds.

Commey, defending his title for the first time since winning it earlier this year, will have to weigh no more than the 134¼ pounds he did on Thursday for the IBF’s second day weigh-in on Friday morning.

The card airs on ESPN from the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula California on Friday night, June 28th, with junior middleweight Carlos Adames taking on Patrick Day in the co-main event.
