Ben Askren Reacts To Naysayers Ahead Of Jake Paul Boxing Match
Ben Askren has a message to those who question if it’s worth the risk to fight Jake Paul.
Triller recently revealed to ESPN that Askren and Paul will collide in a boxing ring on April 17. Askren is a former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder. He ended his pro MMA career with a record of 19-2, 1 NC.
Paul is 2-0 as a pro boxer with both victories coming by way of knockout. Paul’s wins were against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA star Nate Robinson. Despite having boxing experience, Askren’s time in combat sports far surpasses Paul’s.
During an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Askren said he doesn’t understand people who think it’s a risk to fight Paul under boxing rules (via MMAJunkie.com).
“It’s not like I’m going to box Mike Tyson. It’s not like I’m going to box Roy Jones Jr. Yeah, if I had to box those dudes, I’d be genuinely worried. I would be nervous. Or maybe, name another good guy. I’d be like, ‘Aww (expletive).’ Even if I had to fight in a boxing match (against) some of these MMA guys. I’ve stepped in the cage with trained killers – guys who do this for a living. Jake Paul is a YouTube star who beat up two guys who have literally never been in a fight in their lives. The notion this guy is good at boxing is delusional.”
Askren hasn’t competed since October 2019. “Funky” was submitted by Demian Maia and announced his retirement shortly after. Askren underwent a Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure and says he is now pain-free.
