Ben Askren Working With Freddie Roach Ahead Of Jake Paul Fight

Ben Askren will enlist the help of Freddie Roach ahead of his showdown with Jake Paul.

Askren and Paul are scheduled to collide in a boxing match on April 17. Askren is a former MMA world champion under the Bellator and ONE Championship banners. He’s never had pro boxing experience but his history in combat sports far outweighs that of Paul.

Askren had a chat with the folks at MMAJunkie Radio. “Funky” revealed that he will work with renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach.

“I’m trying to be as good of a boxer as I can. I’m not under the impression that I’m gonna be a pro boxer. I’ve been top 10 in the world in four different sports. I know what it’s like to be world-class. I’m not gonna be a world-class boxer, but I don’t gotta be a world-class boxer. I just gotta beat up Jake freaking Paul. That ain’t gonna be that hard, guys.”

Askren admitted that his time with Roach won’t be long but he plans on getting as much knowledge about the sweet science as he can.

“I’m only in L.A. for a week, so I’m gonna get as much as I can out of Freddie Roach. I’m gonna pick his brain. So I started training, maybe six weeks it’s been. First couple of weeks was just like strength and conditioning, let me get back in shape because I couldn’t really start training until Dec. 1 because of my hip surgery. I couldn’t do anything until Dec. 1.”

Paul is an Internet celebrity with two bout boxing matches under his belt. Both bouts ended in knockout victories for Paul. His opponents were fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA star Nate Robinson.

Askren hasn’t competed since October 2019. He announced his retirement from MMA competition after suffering a submission loss to Demian Maia.
