WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) wants to make a statement on Cinco de Mayo, as he prepares to move up to cruiserweight to challenge Zurdo Ramírez for his unified WBA and WBO titles.
For over a decade, the first weekend of May has been synonymous with Canelo Alvarez. However, with Canelo currently sidelined after elbow surgery and a planned return for September, Benavidez made his intentions clear: he wants the date for the best fights.
“That date doesn’t belong to one fighter. It’s for the [boxers] who give the best fights. I want them to never forget the date and the event, to make it long-lasting,” Benavidez said
Having successfully defended his light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde in November, Benavidez knows a win makes him a three-weight world champion. It also opens the doors for bigger fights against the likes of Canelo or a light heavyweight unification with Dmitry Bivol.
