Benavidez Eyes Potential Fight Vs. Heavyweight Champ Usyk

WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) addressed the possibility of challenging unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, saying he would like to face him “someday” rather than an immediate target.

Benavidez will face Zurdo Ramirez on May 2 for the latter’s WBA and WBO Cruiserweight Titles, knowing a win makes him a three-weight champion. Having already outgrown the 168-pound division, the 29-year-old believes a stint at cruiserweight and eventually heavyweight is inevitable, as he eyed Usyk.

“Maybe one day we can get a fight with Usyk,” Benavidez said

Usyk has already made it clear that the end of his career is in sight. The 39-year-old Ukrainian outlined a final three-fight hitlist. He defends his WBC heavyweight title against former GLORY kickboxing heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven on May 23. Usyk has then targeted the winner of the Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois WBO title fight (set for May 9), with a possible trilogy bout against Tyson Fury, meaning the fight is unlikely to happen.
