WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) has moved on from a fight with Canelo Alvarez, stating that he would reject the fight even if it were offered today.
After spending four years as the WBC’s top contender at 168 pounds without ever securing the mandatory shot, Benavidez has decided to focus on other targets. The tension between the two camps reached a boiling point following rumors that Canelo was offered $150 million for the fight, which Canelo allegedly declined. Benavidez has taken over Canelo’s traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend slot in Las Vegas, as he will move up to 200 pounds to challenge unified WBA and WBO Cruiserweight Champion Gilberto RamÃrez on May 2. Benavidez plans to remain at the higher weights, ruling out a fight with Canelo at 168.Â
“He’d be saying he’s scared without saying he’s scared. I don’t want to backtrack and take a regular fight,” Benavidez said
