Benavidez: Plant Is Overrated

The entirety of boxing’s middleweight division is filled with top stars. They aren’t just put on one brand either, as everyone is spread out. When it comes to super-middleweights, Premier Boxing Champions may have hit the jackpot when it comes to a specific rivalry.

David Benavidez is the WBC Super-Middleweight Champion, while Caleb Plant is the IBF Champion. Both with PBC, they are destined to clash. In fact, in an exclusive with FIGHT SPORTS prior to his last bout, Plant (20-0) stated they are close to facing one another.

“When he (Benavidez) fought Ronald Gavril in Las Vegas, when he won and was walking down the stairs of the ring, I was standing right at the bottom of the stairs just so I can ask him, ‘Hey, when do you want to make this happen?’ And since his promotor was standing right there with me, he said I need a couple more fights, and he needs a couple more fights,” Plant stated. “He’s a young kid, I’m pretty young myself, I only have nineteen fights right now. I think it is something they are just trying to build, turn into a megafight, which I understand. I’m not interested in waiting too long. I’m not in a position where I can say who I fight, when I fight, where I fight.”

Plant won his last bout against Vincent Feigenbutz in decisive fashion. With Benavidez (22-0) in the crowd, Plant called his shot for a unification bout. What does Benavidez (22-0) think of a fight with Plant?

“El Bandera Roja” welcomes the challenge, as he see’s it as an easy fight. On a Reddit AMA, Benavidez stated Plant as a challenge wouldn’t be as big of a bout as other fighters out there.

“Caleb Plant I think definitely,” Benavidez stated, via Boxing Scene. “There’s not a lot overrated I can think of other than Plant … I feel like, if you just look at him, he’s not the biggest puncher, I feel like he gasses out after six  rounds. Saunders has a lot of experience, Smith has a lot of experience, they look like they hit harder than Plant so the weakest champion out of the bunch is Caleb Plant.

“I would unify with Caleb Plant because I feel like that’s the most personal fight there is at super middleweight, so I feel like that would be the best fight there is … Yeah, I believe he wants to fight me. I believe he thinks he can beat me, but in reality that’s not gonna happen.”

After winning the WBC belt against Ronald Gavril back in 2017, Benavidez was suspended when a test came back positive for cocaine. Stripped of the belt, he reclaimed it with a win over Anthony Dirrell back in September. A rumored bout between him and Roamer Alexis Angulo was postponed as a result of the coronavirus. He has 19 wins via knockout.

Plant beat Jose Uzcategui for the IBF title in January 2019 and has defended it twice.
