Benavidez Powers Past Ramirez To Become A Three-Weight Champ
David Benavidez (32-0) dropped Gilberto Ramirez (48-2) twice to become a three-division world champion and unify the cruiserweight division.
Benavidez forced a sixth-round stoppage to pick up Ramirez’s WBA and WBO cruiserweight world titles. The win meant Benavidez became the first fighter to win belt at 168, 175 and 200 pounds. From the opening rounds, Benavidez consistently beat Ramirez to the punch that forced “Zurdo” to retreat.
By the second and third rounds, Benavidez began targeting the chin. In the closing seconds of the fourth, Benavidez landed a right hand that backed Ramirez into the ropes before unleashing a combination that sent “Zurdo” to the canvas. Though Ramirez survived the round, the champion was visibly shaken.

By the sixth round, the physical toll became apparent. Ramirez’s right eye was nearly swollen shut. The end came after Benavidez trapped a weary Ramirez, who took a knee following heavy combinations. Ramirez remained on the canvas, as the fight was stopped. In his post-fight comments, Benavidez called out Canelo Alvarez who attended the event but left before Benavidez fought. Meanwhile, Ramirez was taken to hospital after swelling to his right eye. He has since then been released.
