Benavidez Seeks Jermall Charlo Fight If Canelo Decides To Face Munguia

David Benavidez has slammed Canelo Alvarez for keeping the super middleweight division on hold by not agreeing to fight him as the Mexican Monster targets Jermall Charlo as an alternative.

Benavidez awaits a potential fight with Alvarez after stopping Demetrius Andrade after six rounds to keep his position as the WBC super middleweight interim champion. Nevertheless, getting a fight with Alvarez has not been easy. Benavidez has instead faced the rest of the division, which included former champions such as Andrade and Caleb Plant. Meanwhile, Alvarez chose to face a 154-pounder in the form of Jermell Charlo. That has left Benavidez on the sidelines, waiting in the wings while he contemplates a fight with Charlo.

“Charlo said he wanted to fight me. I think that would be a good experience for me to take into the Canelo fight. I’m going to take to Al Haymon to see if we can probably get that Charlo fight. Like you said, I don’t think Canelo is going to fight me next. Maybe in September [2024]. So maybe if we get Charlo in there in the beginning of next year, and then we get Canelo in September, I think that would be a great move on our part,” Benavidez

Despite this being the case, reports also suggest that Canelo’s next fight may lie elsewhere. Jaime Munguia is the name being linked, as he is another undefeated Mexican. Munguia has 42 wins, with 33 by way of knockout. However, the boxer has only had two fights at the weight class. And yet, he does appear to be a credible name given that he is ranked number one with the WBO. That may frustrate Benavidez, who has been waiting longer in a mandatory position. With that being said, Benavidez has called out Canelo for not fighting his mandatories.

“Why does he have all the belts? He should just do celebrity boxing matches. Why is he still holding the belts hostage and not giving the #1 contenders the opportunities they deserve? You owe it to the people; let’s give the people what they want to see,” Benavidez said
