Berchelt Stops Vargas in Six to Retain

Miguel Berchelt was absolutely dominant in his rematch with Francisco Vargas, brutalizing the former champion until his corner stopped the fight to give Berchelt a successful defense of the WBC Super Featherweight Title.

The fight took place as the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona.

After a bit of a slow start in the opening round, Berchelt landed several combinations in the second, constantly switching between aiming for the body and head. While Vargas delivered his fair share in the third, he was left busted up by the defending champ by the end of the round.

The two traded throughout the fourth round but Berchelt was landing better, both in quantity and quality. Vargas tried to fight back once more in the fifth, but Berchelt picked him apart, and by the end of the next round, Vargas’ trainer had seen enough and refused to let his fighter go back out.

This gave Berchelt his fifth successful defense of the WBC’s 130-pound crown.
